Community Partners is a program of the Harvard Business School Club of Greater New York, Inc. that provides opportunities for Harvard Business School alumni to use their business skills on behalf of the community in which they live and work. Through these pro bono activities, Community Partners offers not-for-profit organizations access to professional expertise that might otherwise not be affordable.

Welcome to the HBSC/NY Community Partners Program
The HBSC/NY Community Partners program (“Community Partners”) was restarted in New York in April 1998 to bring together Harvard Business School (“HBS”) alumni and local not-for-profit organizations in volunteer consulting projects. The mission of Community Partners is to:
- Serve the Greater New York communities by providing free business consulting to nonprofit organizations; and
- Serve Harvard Business School alumni in the Greater New York area by providing opportunities for them to channel their interests into community service.
The Community Partners program was initiated in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1986, with support from the HBS Club of Northern California. Since its start-up in Northern California, over 400 HBS alumni have worked on Community Partners projects for more than 100 diverse not-for-profit organizations including museums, performing arts, social services and community development agencies. We welcome you to the group and hope that you will find, as we did, that you can give back to the community, use your valuable business skills to help other organizations, and meet interesting people through volunteering with Community Partners.
Community Partners is associated with the Harvard Business School Club of Greater New York (“HBSC/NY”), the local HBS alumni club, and is supported by the club. Community Partners is governed by a Board of Advisors (HBS alumni and club officers with significant experience in the non-profit world). The Board actively recruits new nonprofit consulting projects, oversees projects in process, and ensures that Community Partners fulfills its stated mission. A Project Coordinator (typically a Board member, although other interested HBS members may serve in this role) will act as a liaison to your project, organizing the initial meeting with the client, helping structure the project, offering subject matter expertise and connections to other resources.
Community Partners consulting projects are initially identified through recommendations from local HBS alumni and other contacts of the Community Partners Board of Advisors. Every month, the Board of Advisors will evaluate potential projects for viability, location, and fit with alumni interests and expertise. Potential clients must be Greater New York area not-for-profit organizations IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, a Board of Directors, at least 3 full-time employees and an annual operating budget of at least $100,000. Project criteria include assignments that deal with business-related issues such as strategic planning, organizational development, finance or marketing. Projects are scaled so as to be completed by a team of 2-4 volunteer consultants within a 3-5 month time frame. Community Partners will not involve itself with efforts in fund raising, political campaigns, or religious organizations. We select 15-20 projects a year, and advertise them to HBS alumni through HBSC/NY monthly newsletter, HBSC News, and emails. We then match up the selected projects with volunteering alumni. Once the teams are in place, kickoff meetings are set to get the projects going
